It was the night of August 18 when Bill Simmons first reported (on his podcast) that Jeff Bezos may be interested in buying the Boston Celtics. The Amazon founder is the second-richest man in the world and has plenty of breathing room in his pockets to buy a professional sports team.
Celtics Rumors: Jeff Bezos reportedly not interested in buying Celtics
However, just a few days later, a report has surfaced that completely contradicts Simmons’ statement. According to Nick Wingfield of The Information, Bezos has no plans to purchase the Celtics.
"Jeff Bezos has no plans to bid on the Boston Celtics, according to a person close to Bezos," Wingfield wrote.
This isn’t the first time Bezos’ name has been brought up in the rumblings of the sports world. When the Washington Commanders were up for sale, Bezos was a potential buyer, but he ended up deciding not to bid on the team.
In addition, should Bezos want to get into the NBA business, the Celtics may not be his top option. As expansion rapidly approaches, Seattle is expected to get a team. That may be more interesting to Bezos. Amazon has deep roots in the city, which means buying a team in that city could make more sense than Boston.
That said, the Celtics already have an established brand and are one of the most valuable organizations in sports. So, if Bezos did want to get in on the business, buying the Celtics would be a great place to start.
Regardless, his interest in getting into bed with Boston is completely unknown at this point.
Shortly after the Celtics won the 2024 NBA Championship, it was announced that Wyc Grousbeck planned to sell the team. It was a shocking announcement that nobody saw coming, putting big changes into motion.
Boston has one of the most expensive payrolls in NBA history, meaning whoever decides to buy the team will either have to be willing to pay or be willing to significantly cut down the roster.
The sale of the team isn’t supposed to take effect in full until 2028, so Grousbeck will still maintain control until then. But changes are coming.
