SI's Chris Mannix relayed that the Boston Celtics would "undoubtedly" welcome an ownership bid from Amazon founder, executive chairman, and former president and CEO Jeff Bezos and that the NBA would be just as receptive to having him in Boston.
"Celtics should -- and undoubtedly would -- welcome a Jeff Bezos bid. Deep pockets (for luxury tax paying purposes), new arena (Bezos isn't paying rent for long)," Mannix prefaced before saying, "The NBA would love to have Bezos as part of its ownership group, too."
Bill Simmons heard that the Bezos-Celtics buzz is "real" and reported as much on the August 19 edition of The Bill Simmons Podcast.
“In the last few days there’s been some I think legitimate buzz about Jeff Bezos buying the Celtics, and I think it’s real. I think he’s gonna be one of the suitors,” Simmons said (h/t MassLive).
Jeff Bezos is reportedly considering buying the Celtics in latest ownership rumor
There are so many positives to Bezos becoming the leader of the Celtics' brain trust. First and foremost, bringing a WNBA team to a new arena would be the perfect way to boost the W even more amidst a record-breaking season across the board in 2024. Even a new part-time home for the C's would be a great way to boost revenue in the city.
But let's not get too hasty and take the Celtics way from the TD Garden entirely. Splitting home games between 100 Legends Way and the "Amazon Arena" would make the true home games on the parquet mean even more.
Of course, things could get more expensive for everyone with another arena in Boston. It's not all positive. But Bezos' presence, if it meant another venue, would create jobs, hopefully including 12 professional basketball jobs for women, and give confidence that the tab would be picked on the C's high-priced core for years to come.
Plus, no Celtics fan wants to see any of the key title-winning pieces leave anytime soon. Bezos can eliminate that financial worry entirely.
