BREAKING UPDATE: At 1:30 PM EST, the Celtics released an updated official injury report, confirming that Jayson Tatum is available and will make his season debut on Friday night.

Jayson Tatum is back, folks. He’s officially listed as questionable for Friday night’s home game against the Mavericks, but let’s face it, he’s back. The Celtics upgraded JT for the first time this season on Thursday’s injury report, and Shams Charania of ESPN reported that Tatum will play this season and that the expectation is that he’ll make his season debut on Friday night.

Charania went on to say that Tatum has been fully cleared and that he’s ready to go. The final step is just a matter of Jayson informing the Celtics and making it official ahead of the game. We’ve been waiting for this moment for almost 10 months, and now, on March 6th, 2026, it appears the wait is over, and that day has finally arrived.

The moment Tatum gets introduced to the TD Garden crowd for the first time is going to be a ‘remember where you were’ kind of moment, and it’s hard to even fathom the electricity of the crowd. When he scores his first basket, an earthquake may register in the Boston area.

Surely there will be a minutes restriction, and it remains to be seen exactly how Joe Mazzulla will deploy Tatum and how quickly the team will bring him along. It may be a slow go of it for a while, and there will almost certainly be some growing pains and rust, but with over a month left in the regular season, and the Celtics sitting near the top of the East, there’s ample time to get enough live game reps to shake the dust off ahead of what’s hopefully, a long playoff run.

And that process is set to begin on Friday night.

Tatum set to debut in Cooper Flagg’s first trip to TD Garden

In terms of the first game on the journey for Tatum, he’ll be playing a local, New England kid and a fellow Dukie in rookie sensation Cooper Flagg. Flagg had been out since before the All-Star break with a foot injury, but he made his return on Thursday night against the Magic.

Normally, you might expect Flagg to sit out the second night of a back-to-back, but I’d be shocked if he doesn’t suit up for this one, a nationally televised spot in his first trip to the Garden, after growing up a diehard Celtics fan.

I’m also not one to question injuries, but after trading Anthony Davis at the deadline, the Mavs have made a pretty heavy commitment to tanking and adding another lottery pick next to Flagg. I’m not saying the foot injury wasn’t legitimate, but I think he could have played through it if he needed to, and that’s exactly what I expect him to do on Friday night against his hometown team.
