Former Celtics draft pick is falling apart with no signs of recovery

Juhann Begarin, who the Boston Celtics selected in the 2021 NBA Draft, hasn’t been faring well overseas. He’s still only 23 years old, but he hasn’t made any progress toward reaching the NBA. In fact, Begarin’s stats have slowly been declining year by year, and it doesn’t seem like he’ll be suiting up for the Celtics anytime soon.

Boston selected Begarin with the No. 45 pick back in 2021, and he did come over to play for the Celtics—in Summer League. He appeared in two Summer league stints with Boston, taking the floor in 10 total games while wearing a Celtics jersey.

The question is, will he ever play for them in the regular season?

Still 23 years old, Begarin is a 6-foot-5 wing/forward. From Les Abymes, France, he has been playing professional basketball in France since he was a teenager. This year, the 2025-26 campaign, is his ninth.

In his fourth year of pro ball, Begarin had the best season of his career. Luckily for him, it was the season before he declared for the NBA Draft, which raised his stock.

That year, Begarin averaged 11.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.4 steals while shooting 45.9% from the field and 36.4% from deep on 4.2 three-point attempts per contest.

Unfortunately, things haven’t gone well for Begarin since. Each year of professional basketball he’s played since then, Begarin’s stats haven’t been great, and he’s losing minutes, too.

That year, he played 26.6 minutes per contest, which earned him a bump the next season (28.0). In the three years following that, Begarin played 26.2 minutes, 22.5 minutes, and 10.0 minutes.

After the 2022-23 season (26.2 minutes), Begarin moved from Paris Basketball to Nanterre 92 (22.5). Then, the next season (10.0 minutes), Begarin played for AS Monaco Basket.

Now, still in Monaco, Begarin’s averages are way down from his best season of international ball.

This year, he’s averaging just 4.5 points, 2.3 rebounds, 0.6 assists, and 0.6 steals while shooting a mere 38.7% from the field and 22.7% from beyond the arc on 2.8 three-point attempts per game.

Needless to say, he’s taken a step back from the year prior to getting drafted by the Celtics, which means the chances of him making the leap from France to the US are slim (at least, for the time being).

Perhaps Begarin could make another leap as he continues to grow, but for now, it seems likely that he'll remain in France.
