The Boston Celtics are going to be without Neemias Queta on Sunday night. It will be just the second time this season Queta has missed a game, with the other being in Boston’s recent win over the Detroit Pistons. In that one, Boston turned to rookie two-way center Amari Williams, and they may have to again against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Williams gave Boston some solid minutes against the Pistons. Though he didn’t fill up the stat sheet, he still managed to impact the game at a high level. And now that Queta is out against the Cavs on Sunday, Williams could be called on once again.
They might need him.
Celtics could need Amari Williams vs. Cavs
Boston selected Williams with the No. 46 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. He hasn’t played for them much this year, however, spending most of his time in the G League with the Maine Celtics.
Through the early portion of the season up in Portland, Williams has flashed some fun signs of impressive talent, especially as a passer, which was his best skill coming out of the draft.
So far this season, Williams has appeared in seven games for Maine, playing 31.1 minutes per contest, which is the fourth-most of any player on the team (behind only Ron Harper Jr., Max Shulga, and Kendall Brown).
Williams has averaged 12.7 points, 10.9 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.9 blocks per game while shooting 64.2% from the floor.
When he was called up to play against Detroit, amidst Queta dealing with a left ankle sprain, it was unclear what his role would be. Luka Garza got the start, but Williams ended up playing more minutes than him.
As soon as Williams got in the game, he set the tone against one of the toughest frontcourts in the league. He pushed Jalen Duren around and battled with Isaiah Stewart.
Boston could use some of the toughness he brings to the floor against the Cavaliers. Jarrett Allen will be out for the game, but the Cavs will still have Evan Mobley to deal with.
Last time the Celtics played the Cavs, they had Josh Minott check Mobley, and he did a good job. But still, they could use someone to soak up some center minutes when Garza is off the floor, or if Garza doesn’t play as well as Joe Mazzulla hopes.
Sunday night could be another chance for Williams to shine.
