There are so many games that jump off the page the first time you look at the Boston Celtics’ schedule for the 2026-27 season. Their first home matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers, their Christmas Day game against the Miami Heat, their home-opener against the New York Knicks.
Sometimes, it’s not until the dust settles where you find the hidden gems. Perhaps the most prominent of the bunch this season will be Boston’s trip to face the Minnesota Timberwolves on Feb. 28, 2027.
Not only has Minnesota been a consistent playoff team over the past few seasons that should hold up its end of the bargain for a fun night of hoops, but apparently, they invited the Celtics to be a part of Kevin Garnett’s jersey retirement ceremony, per Timberwolves reporter Dane Moore.

The Wolves play the Boston Celtics that night.
Garnett’s night in Minny is long overdue. He refused any sort of involvement with the team until Glen Taylor was no longer the owner. That day finally came last year, when Taylor sold to an ownership group led by Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez on June 24, 2025.
KG is both a Celtics and Timberwolves legend
The Hall of Famer spent the first 12 years of his illustrious career playing for the Wolves, as the expansion franchise found its footing in the league. Thanks to KG, they made a run to the 2004 Western Conference Finals on the heels of his MVP season.
They never managed to reach that level again, and eventually hit a crossroads with Garnett. After 35,535 minutes, 19,041 points, 10,542 rebounds, 1,576 blocks, and 1,282 steals, it was clear they weren’t in the best position to help him compete for a title anymore and needed to find him a new home -- Boston.
KG quickly embraced the change and the city embraced him back. He revamped Celtic pride and played a huge role in the franchise’s return to he relevance. Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen formed a new “Big 3” for the Cs and led the team to its 17th NBA Championship in year one.
He went on to put together a strong six seasons in Boston. Garnett appeared in 396 regular-season games for the Celtics, earning five All-NBA appearances and a Defensive Player of the Year along the way.
There’s no debate of his importance to both fanbases, so it makes it even more special that the two franchises will square off on a night dedicated to Garnett.
