Bob Myers recently joined Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady on Cousins. Naturally, much of the conversation centered on the Philadelphia 76ers.
The former front-office architect of the Golden State Warriors is now the president of sports for Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, the entity that owns the Sixers.
In that role, Myers is involved in high-level decisions. That included Philadelphia's pursuit of Jaylen Brown. The day after the franchise pulled off that blockbuster deal with the Boston Celtics, he delivered a message to the former Finals MVP.
"We need you to lead," instructed Myers. That missive must have been music to the ears of their new arrival.
76ers wise to empower Jaylen Brown
Philadelphia wants the five-time All-Star to be comfortable. Beyond that, the organization wants him to be his best self. The Marietta, Georgia, native is a natural-born leader. He had considerable influence within the Celtics' locker room.
In Boston, Brown went so far as to learn his teammates' zodiac signs to understand how best to communicate with each of them. Now on a new team, he won't want to force the issue or step on anyone's toes.
At his introductory press conference with the 76ers, he stated that he has to earn a leadership role. That awareness is important. But so is the championship pedigree that Brown brings.
Even with LeBron James subsequently joining forces with him, as Myers conveyed, players will look to someone who knows what it takes to reach the NBA summit. Not just being a contributor to that title team, but a driving force in one of the most successful eras in Celtics history, Brown's voice will carry weight in Philadelphia.
Jaylen Brown brings an edge to the Sixers
Some lead through their actions; others do so vocally. Brown does both. When Myers quickly reached out to empower the two-time All-NBA selection, he was letting a fiery player know that the 76ers need his edge.
"We needed an edge, and I think Jaylen Brown sets an edge. To win a championship, you need guys that are of that ilk, that are comfortable being uncomfortable... Boston's former star wing is quick to turn a slight into fuel to defy his detractors. In his 10 years in the Association, he hasn't had to look far for those. From the moment he got drafted in 2016, his name was constantly in the rumor mill.
But even beyond having to deal with that or criticism of his play, particularly his ball-handling, he even admitted at times to concocting contrived examples of being aggrieved to help maintain his edge.
The passion and fire he plays with can be contagious; they're easy to feed off of. That's an element that he'll provide more than anyone else on their roster. It's an area that makes a difference in how far a playoff run goes. And it's a department that, without Brown, they'd otherwise feel short in.
He didn't need Myers to permit him to be his authentic self on the basketball court. However, having one of the organization's higher-ups, whose resume and reputation carry plenty of clout, do so surely meant a lot to him. It's a message that makes it that much easier for Brown to fit in by standing out.
