Did the Boston Celtics do enough this offseason to be considered title favorites?
The Boston Celtics have made significant changes to their roster this offseason, and the reaction from fans has been mixed. However, in the eyes of the Vegas oddsmakers, the Celtics remain title favorites or in the top three.
With the changes to the roster and the loss of Marcus Smart, it begs the question: should the Cs still be title favorites?
The Celtics started the offseason with the Smart trade, and they received Kristaps Porzingis. In my eyes, the Cs got worse with this trade because Porzingis is not a reliable player, and he won’t change the overall mentality of the team. The problem with this offseason has been that the Celtics did not add anything of value around the margins.
After losing role player Grant Williams, the Celtics have added Oshae Brissett and Jordan Walsh. This is not enough for a team that is contending for championships. With the Celtic’s current roster, I find it hard to believe that Vegas and NBA media personalities are convinced the Celtics should be the favorite. The Celtics are not better than the Denver Nuggets, Phoenix Suns, or Miami Heat if they get Damian Lillard.
A poor Boston Celtics supporting cast will limit Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown
Although the Celtics still have Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, they have not shown that they can lead a team with a poor supporting cast. Having Tatum and Brown will have the Celtics in the contending mix, but the favorites? That’s a little too high right now.
Boston is not the title favorite currently in my eyes, but that does not mean they can’t get to that level. If the Celtics make some moves before the end of the offseason or add at the trade deadline, they could position themselves to be the title favorites.
Overall, it will be interesting to see how the odds change once the season starts. Last-second signings could still happen, and the Boston Celtics more than anyone have proven to be a logical landing spot for ring-chasers.
