The Boston Celtics should trade Jaylen Brown for Trae Young

The Boston Celtics got an up-close look at Trae Young, playing them in the First Round of the NBA Playoffs this season, and it could have doubled as an evaluation for a potential trade. With Jaylen Brown famously from the Atlanta area, the Atlanta Hawks could have a higher level of trust in re-signing him next summer.

Trae Young and the Hawks organization have seemingly grated on one another off and on over the past few seasons, and whether Young asks out or the organization gets out ahead of it, Young could be available via trade this summer. If so, a deal swapping Brown for Young could be on the table.

Young would open up a whole new dimension for the Celtics with his passing and deep-range shot-taking. Their shooting would ascend to a whole new level with Young slinging passes from anywhere on the court right into their shooting pockets, and his gravity would open up the court for Jayson Tatum and Malcolm Brogdon to make their way into the paint.

One of the issues with Young is that he wants the ball too much, but as we have seen in Philadelphia with James Harden and Joel Embiid, a ball-hogging guard can defer when they’re clearly the No. 2 on a team. Pairing Young with Tatum could establish that same hierarchy and help Young ease into a complementary role.

For the Hawks, they would be able to slide Dejounte Murray to point guard and have Jaylen Brown, DeAndre Hunter, and Bogdan Bogdanovic at the 2-4. That appears on paper to be a better-balanced team with more size, and playing with a true point guard in Murray should help Brown as well. While there would have to be more in the deal to balance things out, the foundation is reasonable enough to explore.
