Mike Muscala

The 2023 trade deadline was one in which the Boston Celtics front office could’ve been truly all-in on going for Banner 18, but instead of finding someone capable of cracking the postseason rotation, Mike Muscala was brought on to serve as an emergency backup plan who was ultimately never needed.

Worse yet, it took multiple second-round draft picks to get the Oklahoma City Thunder to agree to the deal. With a club option for next season, Muscala could turn out to be a midseason rental that ended up playing just 21 minutes during the postseason.

Truthfully, the Celtics could do better than merely cutting bait with Muscala. Like Kornet, Muscala could be used in a Pritchard trade to make the money work, and since his salary is a tad higher than Kornet’s, there are more trade opportunities to be had.

Opting into his club option and trading Muscala during the 2023 NBA offseason should be a priority for the front office. Particularly if Danilo Gallinari looks like he used to and would threaten to push Muscala further down the depth chart.
