If the Mavericks have any title hopes in the near future, Luka Doncic needs help as soon as possible. ESPN’s Bobby Marks delivers him such with a mock trade that lands a former Boston Celtics floor general drafted by Danny Ainge in Dallas.

That’d be Terry Rozier, who is currently languishing on the rebuilding Hornets and could use a one-way ticket out of Charlotte whenever the franchise can make that happen. Given their trajectory, the Hornets will likely aim to ship off veterans like Rozier and fellow former Celtic Gordon Hayward in order to mine value and lay down the tanking red carpet — as delicately as possible given the league’s new attention to tanking — for top 2023 draft pick Victor Wembanyama.

This deal gets the job done for both teams’ needs:

"Mavs get: Terry Rozier, Kelly Oubre Jr., and Jalen McDanielsHornets get: Tim Hardaway Jr., Davis Bertans, and a 2027 top-10 protected 1st-round pick (becomes second-round picks in 2027 and 2029 if not conveyed)"

Former Boston Celtics guard Terry Rozier is not long for Charlotte

No one expected the Boston Celtics to get less out of Kemba Walker than the Hornets got out of Terry Rozier when both guards were signed-and-traded for each other back in 2019. Four years later, Walker is playing in Italy after being traded, waived, and then traded again, and Rozier is a hot commodity on the trade market.

With that said, Rozier is not long for Charlotte after reaching the NBA Play-in the past two years and losing both times after not getting invited to the NBA bubble down in Disney World during the pandemic in 2020.

Whether it be in a deal like this, or perhaps in a trade with the Los Angeles Lakers, Rozier should have a different employer on February 10 after the 2023 NBA trade deadline comes and goes.
