The Boston Celtics dispatched the Milwaukee Bucks in impressive fashion on Christmas day 139-118, but afterward, the hearts of Cs fans everywhere sunk thinking that their beloved point guard was making a trade request.
Marcus Smart dropped cryptic tweets that seemingly indicated that he was done with playing in Boston:
All of this, though, was an elaborate ploy to make the eventual payoff extremely rewarding…
Congratulations to the future Mr. and Mrs. Smart!
Boston Celtics fans lost it thinking Marcus Smart was requesting a trade
After dropping eight assists during the best win of the 2022-23 Celtics season, it would have felt out of place for Marcus Smart to want out of Beantown — especially since trade chatter involving No. 36 has seemingly died out in the wake of his becoming a true point guard the past two seasons under Ime Udoka and Joe Mazzulla.
Still, Smart’s ambiguous language scared the bejeezus out of Boston Celtics fans everywhere:
Being in the first year of a four-year, $76 million contract extension, Smart would need to be traded, but few point guards are out there with a similar salary and in a position to be swapped for the Oklahoma State product.
Good thing it’s not on the table — instead being replaced with figuring out what the spread will be at Smart’s 2023 wedding.
