The Boston Celtics had what seemed like a pretty straightforward path to their October 18th opening night matchup with the Philadelphia 76ers, with training camp and the preseason really just meant to fortify the edges on the team’s depth chart.

Now? With Ime Udoka’s suspension for the entire 2022-23 season, due to sexual relations with a staff member, now announced and in effect, all bets are off. The Celtics organization has lost some credibility, and Udoka himself may not be welcomed back this time next year.

Players have every right to have questions about the franchise given how things were handled –though ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski certainly has blood on his hands for his irresponsible reporting on the matter — which creates an uncomfortable environment heading into a season that already had sky-high expectations coming off an NBA Finals appearance.

There’s no core-changing trade being discussed right now, and Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens is trying to maintain order with the installation of respected assistant coach Joe Mazzulla as the interim head coach. That didn’t stop Heavy on Lakers’ Ashish Mathur from coming up with a trade that would shift the landscape on both coasts.

Marthur’s idea is one that was recently proposed by Fadeaway World, though the difference appears to be the lack of a draft pick. Heavy’s mock swap involves the Celtics giving up 2021 All-Star Jaylen Brown and reigning Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart for 4x All-NBA First Teamer Anthony Davis.

Anthony Davis only makes sense for the Boston Celtics if this happens

The backbone of the Boston Celtics winning the east in 2021-22 was their starting lineup, which featured the Robert Williams III-Al Horford combination running roughshod over opposing defenders hoping to get easy buckets at the basket.

Anthony Davis’ potential arrival shifts Horford back to the bench, which could be a good move if they didn’t already have Grant Williams in that role. With both Horford and G. Williams set for extensions next offseason, investing so much into the frontcourt (he makes an average of $40 million over the next three years) isn’t smart for roster-building purposes.

The only way making such an acquisition would make sense would be if Horford followed through on retiring after this season — which definitely feels like more of a possibility with the Ime Udoka drama — as Heavy’s Sean Deveney alluded to possibly happening.
