Nearly two months after his initial trade demand, Kevin Durant has decided to proceed with his partnership with the Brooklyn Nets. Jaylen Brown will remain on the Boston Celtics, Scottie Barnes will remain with the Toronto Raptors, the Memphis Grizzlies and New Orleans Pelicans are keeping their young cores intact, and the Phoenix Suns and Miami Heat are rolling with their top-seeded rosters from a season ago.
Everyone’s time has been wasted. The Golden State Warriors had their championship summer usurped by the KD trade sweepstakes, the Celtics had to play damage control with their 1A star, and the Nets had their front office and head coach openly questioned by their franchise cornerstone.
The only person that looks good through any of this is Kyrie Irving, simply because his own trade request is so far in the back of everyone’s mind that he is now no longer considered the biggest problem in the Brooklyn locker room.
This tweet from a Packers podcaster best sums up the farce that was the KD trade saga of summer 2022:
Kevin Durant’s chess move could do damage to the Boston Celtics
If it was KD’s plan all along to create such chaos with his trade demands that other teams would have to pick up the pieces reconciling with their own players rumored to be on the trade block, well, the man succeeded.
Durant’s chess move made its way out to Golden State, where talks of trading guys like Andrew Wiggins and Jordan Poole could affect their chemistry. It most certainly had an impact on Jaylen Brown’s standing in Boston, as his social media activity indicated that he wasn’t totally happy with how things were playing out.
Brown is reportedly all in on the Cs despite having his name tossed out in trade talks, but Durant’s trade request could be cited in the summer of 2024 for why Brown would feel comfortable finding a new home after having his standing with the Celtics threatened with a possible KD swap this summer.
