Underrated Boston Celtics move No. 3) The signing of Danilo Gallinari

While Malcolm Brogdon may be receiving the bulk of attention when it comes to discussing the best grabs made by the Boston Celtics this offseason, we at HH can’t help but feel as though it’s Danilo Gallinari who was the club’s most needed addition.

Even though Brogdon is certainly a phenomenal talent who could easily wind up being a major compliment to Ime Udoka’s rotation, the C’s already had three other highly competent talents in tow with Marcus Smart, Derrick White, and Payton Pritchard already aboard. With the trade for the 29-year-old, they really only added on a luxury.

The signing of Gallo, however? That was actually a necessity.

Throughout the past several seasons now, Boston has been trying to bring on a player who can serve as a trusty backup to both Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown out on the wing, and, time and time again, their attempts have been rather unsuccessful.

From using lottery picks to draft talents at the position to striking trade-deadline deals for an already established veteran, the Celtics have tried and failed to address this glaring weakness within their depth chart.

With Gallinari now on board, this may turn out to finally be the answer they’ve been looking for all these years.

Despite measuring in at a typical power forward’s size of 6-10, over his 14-year tenure in the league the veteran has proven himself to be more than capable of taking on a heavy workload out on the wing thanks to his impressive set of skills for someone of his height which makes him a quality option for when Udoka opts to give one of the Jays a rest.

Add on the fact that the team’s 26th-ranked points per game and offensive-rated bench unit now consists of a player with career averages of 15.6 points on 38 percent shooting from deep, and the signing of Danilo Gallinari is a move that could absolutely thrust this Boston Celtics rotation from runner ups to legitimate champions.
