Boston Celtics player No. 2) Derrick White

Derrick White proved himself to be a phenomenal trade deadline acquisition for the Boston Celtics this past season, and even managed to serve as a key reason for why the team was able to reach the 2022 NBA Finals, but now with the Malcolm Brogdon transaction, the 28-year-old’s place within the rotation becomes somewhat complicated.

Viewed as a great backup for starting one Marcus Smart, the guard’s ability to play both sides of the ball was something that Ime Udoka took full advantage of within his rotations, especially the ones where the Defensive Player of the Year was either catching his breath on the pine or, simply, was ruled out for a contest altogether.

However, what has us at the Houdini now perplexed is that Brogdon, too, is a player who can play on both ends of the floor and, frankly, has a higher upside than both Smart and White.

Whether their newly attained talent winds up starting or not (a situation we’ll be getting more clarity on as the offseason progresses), it’s more than apparent that this once barren backcourt has grown to be a bit overcrowded and, in turn, the front office could look to make some adjustments by means of the trade market.

Obviously, it should be well established at this point that Smart isn’t going to be heading anywhere this summer, and rightly so.

White, on the other hand, could be, as his contract could net the C’s a rather solid talent at another position to better fill out the rotation (power forward, perhaps?) while his skill set alongside the likes of both Smart and Brogdon could be argued to be a bit redundant.
