The Boston Celtics turned down this Dennis Schroder offer from Los Angeles Lakers
Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens had the chance to send Dennis Schroder back to the Los Angeles Lakers during this past February 10th NBA trade deadline.
Ultimately, Rob Pelinka didn’t have enough to offer the Cs to get something done–instead, losing out to the Houston Rockets who brought the ‘War on Theis’ back to Boston–and the two rivals didn’t do business for the first time in 18 years.
L.A. is to blame, having offered a very uninspired package to Boston for the German floor general’s services.
MassLive’s Brian Robb shared what was likely offered from the purple and gold…and it wasn’t much:
"…some combination of DeAndre Jordan, Kent Bazemore and Wayne Ellington are the likeliest bets to have been included to make the money work for salary matching since those guys have been on the outskirts of the Lakers’ rotation for weeks now."
Schroder was someone the team practically had to move on from, and Stevens got perhaps one of the best possible pieces back that he could have in Daniel Theis.
Theis gives the Cs a legitimate third big man, and he will likely soak up most of, if not all of, the backup bench minutes at the 5. Who knows, he may be able to slide into Al Horford’s starting power forward slot next season if Boston moves on from Horford’s $27+ million non-guaranteed cap figure in the offseason.
The Boston Celtics did as well as they could in the Schroder trade ultimately, having offloaded two expiring deals to open up roster spots. Enes Kanter Freedom’s big personality may be missed by some, but his defensive deficiencies certainly won’t be as he has already been waived by Houston. As for Bruno Fernando, he ultimately wasn’t clicking on his second NBA employer and is better off trying to find a new home elsewhere if the Rockets don’t keep him.
