Boston Celtics dud: Robert Williams III

Just like we shouldn’t get too far ahead of ourselves in our reactions to Aaron Nesmith’s preseason excellence, we should also reel back on any major concerns about the full season outlook for recently extended big man, Robert Williams III for, after all, it’s just one meaningless exhibition game.

That being said, with his performance in game one coupled with the lofty expectations that surround the fourth-year center, his night against the Orlando Magic is our choice for the biggest dud of the bunch.

Looking to hold off the re-acquired former Boston Celtics franchise center, Al Horford, Williams’ contributions in game one of the preseason certainly did him no favors in widening the gap between the two bigs.

In nearly 20 minutes played, the Time Lord registered a -5 box plus-minus on the night, finishing with a rather pedestrian stat line of one point, five rebounds, two assists, and two blocks on an abysmal 0-7 shooting.

Now, luckily for the 23-year-old, his major competition for the starting five slot in Horford also produced rather underwhelmingly (five points, seven rebounds on 33 percent shooting from the floor), so the roster battle is still very much even to this point in time.

That said, if he doesn’t improve in game two and onward, Udoka may be forced to go with the more known commodity in Big Al to start the year.

Next. 2 realistic trades Cs could make before preseason ends. dark
