Boston Celtics: The good, bad, and ugly of the Enes Kanter signing
The ugly of the Boston Celtics’ Enes Kanter signing
Let’s take a look at some of the headlines that came about following the Enes Kanter signing last week:
-“Enes Kanter signing is reminder of Celtics recent offseasons gone awry” – MassLive
-“The Boston Celtics Remain Haunted By Former GM Danny Ainge’s Old Moves” – Forbes
-“Casting call: a quiet offseason so far puts pressure on young Celtics to fill big roles” – CelticsBlog
When a signing is panned near-universally, you know that the person in charge of dishing out the checks may be having a rough go at it.
HH has been supportive of Brad Stevens in his first season as the President of Basketball Operations and remains so. It’s not easy to transition to the front office in an offseason where change is a necessity following a trying 2020-21 season.
That said, this signing doesn’t seem to push the culture forward. While the 2019-20 season was ultimately more successful than 2020-21, Kanter wasn’t a reason why. He was benched when the games mattered.
Let’s hope the narrative that Stevens doesn’t care about the results of this season and instead has an eye on the summer of 2022 doesn’t stick. The Kanter signing has too many thinking it’s the truth.
