Boston Celtics: 3 low-cost point guard options Cs must consider signing
By Mark Nilon
Boston Celtics point guard option No. 3) Isaiah Thomas
Another year, another concern about the point guard rotation for the Boston Celtics.
Just like with the many other times in which this has been an issue, we at HH will drop a name we believe could be of great help that’s familiar both to the Boston Celtics organization as well as the fanbase.
The player: Isaiah Thomas.
We can already envision some in the comments section cursing us out, telling us in all caps to “STOP LIVING IN THE PAST.”
To that, we simply say, not today!
Just a little under a week ago it was rumored that the Cs were considering a reunion with their former franchise player, with a big reason being the fact that President of Basketball Operations, Brad Stevens, is one of the point guard’s ‘biggest fans.’
To date, no such moves have been made that would insinuate the front office is anywhere close to striking a deal with IT and, in fact, since these reports surfaced, others have popped up stating that the idea is not very likely.
Regardless of what the rumor mill says, we stand by the notion that a pursuit of Thomas makes sense for the cash-strapped Celtics, as he’d be a low-cost signing that has accumulated a laundry list of success whilst suiting up in green and white.
During his tenure with Boston, the point guard posted per-game averages of 24.7 points and six assists on 44 percent shooting from the floor and 37 percent shooting from deep while nabbing two All-Star nods, an All-NBA selection, and a top-5 finish in the 2017 MVP race.
As we always say when discussing the idea of bringing IT back, on a veteran’s minimum contract, the concept of reuniting with the offensive-minded guard (career averages of 18.1 point per game scorer with shooting splits of 44 / 36 / 82) could wind up being a solid move for Boston’s putrid offensive production off the pine (ranked 28th in points and 23rd in offensive rating last season) while also simply being a tremendous feel-good story that could help boost the morale of the team as a whole after enduring one of their worst seasons from over the past decade.
