Boston Celtics: Isaiah Thomas a huge fan of new Cs assistant Damon Stoudamire
It’s getting tough to ignore if you are Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens. It’s been tough to ignore for any Cs fan the past several years.
Isaiah Thomas belongs in Boston, and he badly wants to return. While he has said in the past that a reunion isn’t in the cards, that was when the man that traded him, Danny Ainge, was still running the show.
Now, the coach that oversaw his ascension to stardom is in control of the roster and the Cs have a glaring hole at the point guard spot. It has never made more sense than right now for the two sides to put aside the ugly parts of the past and figure out an agreement to bring Thomas home.
In fact, recent developments have only hammered the aforementioned point home. A player Thomas grew up admiring–to the point of even getting a tattoo on himself honoring his nickname–just became an assistant head coach of the Cs.
Ime Udoka’s first coaching staff hire, Damon Stoudamire, was an inspiration to IT growing up, and the diminutive floor general revealed as much via his verified Twitter page:
Having the last guy to legitimately be in the MVP conversation on the roster being coached by the player that he modeled his whole game after just sounds like a good idea on paper, especially considering the wealth of knowledge the pair can pass on to the Cs young roster.
Stoudamire and Thomas know what it’s like to be an underdog, something the team will have to embrace moving forward with the existence of the star trios in Milwaukee, Brooklyn, and whoever else in the Eastern Conference can assemble a super-team in the offseason.
There’s an opportunity here to further the Boston Celtics culture this offseason by adding Thomas to the mix. Thomas’ not-so-subtle hints that he wants to be back will hopefully culminate in the karma of the team finally reversing after a rough few years following the trade that sent him to Cleveland for Kyrie Irving.
