Just because an NBA coach vacates his post doesn’t mean he isn’t an adequate option as the lead voice of an NBA locker room. Most Boston Celtics fans would say Brad Stevens did a pretty good job as head coach, and probably wouldn’t be angry if he was still coaching the Cs.

He’s not, though. Stevens got a major promotion from Cs owner Wyc Grousbeck to serve as the President of Basketball Operations for a team that has been close to reaching the NBA Finals since he came became HC but only has a stogey collection to show for it.

Stevens was a major reason why the team never had a prolonged rebuilding phase like the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers had throughout the latter half of the 2010s. He groomed the team’s top draft picks and developed two of them (Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown) into NBA All-Stars.

Knowing he will be deciding who will be roaming the sidelines in 2021-22 and beyond is a comforting fact. No one knows what makes this current group tick quite as Stevens does, and under his watch, the roster will be rebuilt to better contend.

That’s if he nails the HC hire of course. So far, options have been plentiful, with Jason Kidd, Chauncey Billups, and Kara Lawson profiling as some of the top names early on in the process.

Two new head coaching options have popped up over the weekend due to being let go by their former teams.
