Rick Carlisle is best known as the longest tenured head coach in Dallas Mavericks history, and still is to this day. He holds the Dallas Mavericks record for most career games coached in the regular season and the playoffs and is the only Mavs head coach to ever lead the team to an NBA Championship.

Many people have forgotten, for good reason, that Carlisle used to play in the NBA. Carlisle only spent five seasons in the NBA, three of which he spent with the Boston Celtics. The other two he spent with the New York Knicks and the New Jersey Nets. He appeared in 188 games throughout his career.

After being drafted by the Boston Celtics in the third round of the 1984 NBA Draft, Carlisle had very little impact on the team. His best season came in 1985 when he averaged 2.6 points per game in just under 10 minutes of action per game.

His most notable game as a Celtic came on April 8, 1986 against the Milwaukee Bucks when he made his first, and only, start in his NBA career. Carlisle finished that game with 8 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists. He only appeared in 157 games for Boston.

Outside of being a member of the 1986 NBA Champions team, his overall career highlight came as a member of the Knicks against the Seattle Supersonics when he dropped a career high 21 points in a game, the only time he had scored more than 10 points in his career.
