Boston Celtics C Moritz Wagner

It was somewhat puzzling to the Boston Celtics trade Daniel Theis for two finesse-focused centers with good, if not great, shooting on expiring deals…considering that is exactly what Theis is himself.

As the starting center for the 2019-20 Cs, Theis was able to master the art of the seal and create open looks for his teammates through elite screen-setting. He had trouble adjusting to the new roster in 2020-21, though, particularly playing next to Tristan Thompson in the frontcourt.

One of the bigs acquired in the deal, Moritz Wagner, isn’t magically going to excel where Theis failed. In fact, the C’s new German pivot might be even less equipped to share the floor with another big man.

But Danny Ainge didn’t only bring Wagner on board. He also brought on Luke Kornet, who is thriving in his role and giving Cs fans thoughts of keeping the Vanderbilt product long-term.

With Robert Williams waiting in the wings to be the starting center and Tacko Fall proving that he is more than just a marketing ploy this season, Wagner could be the odd man out if Kornet continues his impressive Cs stint.
