Boston Celtics: 3 additions from 2020 offseason that could be traded
Boston Celtics 2020 addition that could be traded #3: Jeff Teague
Jeff Teague might not even get the trade treatment from Danny Ainge…his current value could dictate that an outright release is the best course of action for the 32-year-old.
In the midst of the worst shooting year of his career (by far), Teague likely won’t have teams lining up for his minimum expiring contract. If anything, the most likely path for Teague to find minutes in 2021 is being traded to a team that ended up buying him out to allow him to latch onto a team with a need for shooting (he is blazing nets from beyond the arc at 43% shooting on just under two attempts per game).
It’s an uphill climb for Teague in Beantown, with Kemba Walker and Payton Pritchard both being far more deserving of minutes at the 1 than him. Minutes to Tremont Waters and Carsen Edwards are better time investments for Brad Stevens at this point as well.
Looking around the league, there was certainly value that could have been had on the MLE market at the point guard spot. As Favale points out in the aforementioned piece regarding the C’s 2020 offseason, Thompson may have been a bad use of one of the only routes Boston had to sign a valuable role player:
"…the addition of Thompson continues to feel like a misallocation of resources."
There’s time for Ainge to reverse course, so we shall see if his 2020 misgivings could turn into immediate improvements to Boston’s title odds.
