Why the Boston Celtics do it

Like the last deal, Barnes replaces much of Gordon Hayward’s production, but this deal expands to the point of also finding Kemba Walker’s younger and more cost-efficient replacement in Tyrese Haliburton, who looks like a potential future star (12 points, five assists, four rebounds on 49/45/87 shooting splits).

Throw in Willie Cauley-Stein to shore up the center rotation, and giving up two draft picks becomes a necessary exercise to improve the team in the short-term and (exponentially) in the long-term.

Why the Sacramento Kings do it

This move takes the rebuild several steps further for Sacramento, who acquires a potential franchise cornerstone to pair with De’Aaron Fox in Kristaps Porzingis. While losing Haliburton stings, his presence somewhat undermines Fox as the lead floor general, and three draft picks and a max contract star having an off-year is a fantastic return for Barnes, Haliburton, and Marvin Bagley, who has been speculated to want out of Sac-Town himself.

Why the Dallas Mavericks do it

Dallas has been in the midst of an extremely disappointing campaign after pushing the Los Angeles Clippers to six games in the first round of the 2020 Western Conference playoffs. This deal shakes their foundation to its very core and gives Luka Doncic a second playmaker and All-Star running mate, along with another power forward drafted in the top four that better fits his timeline in Marvin Bagley.
