Boston Celtics trade idea No. 2) “Spend the historic TPE on a starter”

Though many fans were upset about the way Gordon Hayward’s tenure ended with the Boston Celtics, no one can likely say anything negative about the historically large $28.5 million TPE they received in return via the sign-and-trade with the Charlotte Hornets.

Since then, we have suggested many ways in which the front office can go about best utilizing this luxury, and have dropped a few names in which we believe would be worth pursuing with it.

B/R is under the same mindset that Ainge should definitely use the TPE to bolster their roster this season, and they think the best way to go about using it would be by targeting a starter:

"The Celtics should have options. If the Sacramento Kings are taking the long road to sustainable success, maybe they’d be willing to unload Harrison Barnes or Buddy Hield. Barnes is a multi-positional defender who can splash spot-up threes. Hield is an electric shooter from distance. Both could be strong contributors playing off of Tatum, Brown and Walker. Should the Orlando Magic ever ditch their perpetual push for the eighth seed, maybe this is finally the year Aaron Gordon gets out of Disney’s backyard. His defensive versatility is drool-worthy, and his offense could have room to grow if he joins a stronger roster with more potent scoring threats. All three could play their way into Boston’s opening group and, more importantly, any of the three could work with the Celtics’ postseason closing lineup."

In part, we are aligned with Buckley’s idea of pursuing a starting-caliber player with their available $28.5 million in cap space. Where we diverge, however, is insinuating that they must get a starter in return.

The beautiful thing about the TPE is that it doesn’t have to be used on just one person but, rather, a whole slew of players.

One of our favorite candidates to pursue whilst using the Traded Player Exception is Houston Rockets power forward, PJ Tucker, who’s only at a cost of $7.9 million and would serve as a fantastic player either in the starting five or off the bench.

So yes, while we partially agree with their idea of targeting a starter, it is not necessarily a “must” in our eyes.

Verdict: Disagree
