Why the Boston Celtics do it

Marcus Smart had quite the gravitational pull during these 2020 playoffs, oftentimes shooting the Boston Celtics out of games with a poor shooting streak. In theory, if you can get two players that can contribute positively, you can vastly improve the team’s chances of winning games when they matter most.

Lou Williams was oftentimes the best player on the 2018-19 feel-good Clippers that took the Golden State Warriors to six games in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs that season. His presence in the Celtics lineup would give Brad Stevens two of the best isolation scorers in the game.

Luke Kennard would add 3-point sniping the team doesn’t currently possess with Smart, and if his health can ever hold up, perhaps he can prove to be a decent defender himself.

Why the Los Angeles Clippers do it

The Clippers have done a great job assembling a dogged defensive unit, with a starting five of Pat Beverly-Paul George-Kawhi Leonard-Marcus Morris-Serge Ibaka being capable of slowing down most any superstar in the league.

Adding Marcus Smart as a sixth man, or even slotting him into Beverly’s starting slot, fortifies the Clippers in a downright terrifying fashion.
