Boston Celtics: Pros and cons of pursuing a Jrue Holiday trade
The Boston Celtics could be in talks with the New Orleans Pelicans about a Jrue Holiday deal. Should they be?
In a pretty substantial offseason twist, the Boston Celtics were revealed as a potential Jrue Holiday suitor:
"The Celtics are the only team in the upcoming draft with three picks in the first round, and according to Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer, they are looking at ways to trade these selections in an attempt to facilitate a deal for Holiday. “The Celtics have offered up their three first-round picks (nos. 14, 26, and 30) in trades to try and move into the lottery, but multiple league sources say they intend to reroute that pick to the Pelicans in exchange for Jrue Holiday,” O’Connor wrote in his latest mock draft. “If Boston is able to acquire the necessary assets, it’d still need to add salaries to make a deal work. Could that mean Gordon Hayward or Kemba Walker could be on the move? No matter the case, the Celtics are up to something big to try and bolster their title odds.”"
The Houdini investigates whether or not that should be the case:
Pros
The most obvious pro is, well, Jrue Holiday is a very good basketball player. He isn’t a perennial All-Star or anything close, but he helps you win games. The 2017-18 New Orleans Pelicans were a masterclass example of a player just below the elite tier aiding one of the game’s best (Anthony Davis) in shocking the Portland Trailblazers in the postseason.
Obviously, the postseason is where the Cs need to get better. They owned a top-5 offense and defense in the regular season but were outworked in the postseason by a Miami Heat team that seemingly wanted it more.
If the issue was chemistry, Holiday is the opposite of a disruptor. He gracefully stepped aside as the primary facilitator when Rajon Rondo was brought aboard in 2017 and became an off-ball threat.
Holiday can be a fine third or fourth option on the Boston Celtics, depending on who would be dealt in a potential trade.
