This offseason could see many moves be made for the Boston Celtics, which has Bleacher Report believing they could wind up being big winners.
Like virtually every offseason since the dawn of time, the Boston Celtics are viewed as an attractive landing spot for available talents in which they realistically can afford, with this year’s crop falling inside the mid-level exception and veteran minimum contracts department.
Over the past several months, we’ve concocted several scenarios in which we believe the Cs could thrust themselves into a title-favorite status and how we believe they could go about having themselves a perfect offseason.
In a recent article published by Bleacher Report, they too believe the Cs have the chance to come away from this offseason as victorious or, as they put it, “winners.”
Writer Grant Hughes penned a piece discussing the five NBA teams best positioned to win the 2020 offseason and, along with the listed number of selections, he provided three honorable mentions, one of which being the Boston Celtics.
His reasoning for their inclusion read as follows:
"With three first-rounders (Nos. 14, 26 and 30) they probably can’t use because of luxury-tax proximity and a full roster, the Boston Celtics seem likely to do something via trade this offseason. They may have to use those selections as sweeteners in cost-saving moves that send Enes Kanter ($5 million player option) and Vincent Poirier elsewhere, or they could swing a little bigger. If Gordon Hayward opts in to the final year of his deal, his $34.2 million salary would be a fine match in a trade for a star. That said, the possibility Hayward may opt out and sign elsewhere looms. If that happens, and Boston loses a starter for nothing, it’d be hard to say it “won” the offseason. That’s why the Celtics don’t quite have the juice to be more than an honorable mention."
In a nutshell, Hughes described the Celtics as “close, but no cigar” in regard to being considered a potential success story this offseason. While they may not have the available roster space or flexibility that the other listed teams possess — Atlanta Hawks, Golden State Warriors, Milwaukee Bucks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Phoenix Suns –, with a few swift moves by General Manager and President of Basketball Operations, Danny Ainge, they could potentially make their way into the winner’s bracket.
