Boston Celtics News: Cs interviewed TCU sharpshooter Desmond Bane
By Mark Nilon
The Boston Celtics have started their interview process for the upcoming NBA Draft and TCU’s Desmond Bane was one of their earlier invitees.
Heading into this year’s NBA Draft the Boston Celtics find themselves in possession of a plethora of value, as they hold the rights to 3 first-round draft picks — 14th, 26th, and 30th overall.
This fad of possessing numerous selections is nothing new for the shamrocks, as they’ve had two or more picks in five of the last eight drafts. In other words, this is simply just the same story, different day.
Last week, the NBA held virtual combine interviews between the media and prospects via Zoom. MassLive’s Tom Westerholm was in attendance, and, by his own addition, was keen on asking two very specific questions in his interview process.
"A popular format from local reporters became tacking a basketball question onto a query about their specific team (one of mine was: “Two questions: How does versatility play a role in your game, and have you talked to the Celtics?”)."
Of all the players he asked these questions to, only one stated that he had been in touch with the C’s decision-makers. That player was TCU’s Desmond Bane.
"“I believe they were my first interview,” Bane said. “I think I was the interview for 15 of the teams that I interviewed with and second for a good majority of the other ones. There was a lot of interest early on, and the Celtics were one of those teams.“They play a lot of similar wings, versatile wings, guys who can switch all over the floor. You saw how valuable a guy like Grant Williams was, a rookie who stepped in and could guard multiple positions. That’s something I feel like I bring to the table as well, and some off-ball shooting, things like that. I have good size for the position and versatility is something that I hang my hat on. I’m kind of one of those junkyard dog guys similar to Marcus Smart, it doesn’t matter if I get matched up on a guy who is bigger than me or much smaller than me, I’m going to find a way to get it done.”"
Bane has spent all four years of his collegiate career playing for TCU. In his final year with the Horned Frogs, the combo guard posted impressive averages of 16.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.5 steals on 45 percent shooting from the floor and 44 percent shooting from deep.
With his stellar play, the sharpshooter was bestowed the honors of First-Team All-Big 12 and, now, finds himself ranked amongst the top long-range shooters heading into the 2020 NBA Draft.
With their desperate need for improved overall offense off the pine — ranked 29th in points per game (28.5), 28th in 3-point percentage (31.8), and 20th in offensive rating (53.6) — the concept of the Boston Celtics interviewing Bane should not come as a surprise to anyone.
Though we’ve discussed many other prospects the Cs should consider, taking a look at the TCU product is the exact right move by Danny Ainge and co.
