Boston Celtics: To keep or trade the 2020 lottery pick is the question

The Boston Celtics will be stocked with several first-round draft picks in the upcoming 2020 NBA Draft, but here’s what Bleacher Report thinks they should do with their lottery pick.

This year is going to be a bit different than what NBA fans are used to, for obvious reasons. There will be a minimal breather between when the NBA season ends–ideally with Jayson Tatum hoisting the Larry O’Brien trophy overhead after the Boston Celtics clinch title #18–and when the offseason begins.

It will be within the same week that a hypothetical NBA Finals game seven concludes and the NBA Draft and free agency take place. This promises to be one of the most hectic transactional periods in the history of the league.

Well, Dan Favale of Bleacher Report believes it should be even more hectic for the C’s, who they believe should trade their lone lottery pick at #14:

"Targeting smaller-scale moves using Kanter’s $5 million salary (if he opts in) is great, but cheap impact players aren’t available in droves. Plus, who knows what type of discussion the No. 14 pick actually generates. Is it Luke Kennard territory? Better? Worse?Combining this choice with one or both of their other firsts makes the most sense. Perhaps 14 and 26 can get them No. 9 from the Washington Wizards. Or maybe 14 and 30 can get them 11 from the San Antonio Spurs. Moral of the story either way: This pick, like Boston’s other two, should absolutely be in play."

The Houdini has long been a proponent of trading these picks for the simple reason that they are a contending team that already features plenty of youth. Adding several more first-round picks that may or may not solve their existing roster problems is a way less safe bet than trading valuable draft stock for a more proven veteran.
