The Boston Celtics are likely to undergo many changes this offseason. Losing players in free agency is likely going to be a reoccurring theme. Once thought of as a core piece, Terry Rozier may have his next team in mind.

Kyrie Irving might not be the only Celtics point guard skipping town this offseason. According to NESN, Terry Rozier could be looking to sign a long-term deal elsewhere as well, especially given recent comments the guard has made. That could be perceived as both good news and bad news for the Boston Celtics.

For Boston, the thought of losing two point guards is downright frightening. Marcus Smart, who came into the league as a one-guard out of Oklahoma State, has transitioned to being a shooting guard full-time. If Irving and Rozier leave, the cupboard will be bare.

Perhaps Brad Stevens can try experimenting with Gordon Hayward running the show. Though Hayward is no longer the player he once was, he is someone who has averaged as many as five assists per game (in the 2013-14 season). With the NBA really pushing the envelope with positionless basketball, perhaps Hayward can become somewhat of a full-time point-forward.

That is far from ideal, though. The Celtics need to be proactive about making sure the point guard spot is filled adequately. That doesn’t mean they need to overpay Rozier to return (the Kyrie ship has all but sailed).

In fact, the Celtics need to let Rozier go if the Bulls come calling with an offer sheet. Chicago is stuck in a rebuild that may take a while after failing to reach the playoffs the last two years. They don’t have many franchise cornerstones, with 2018-19 rookie Wendell Carter Jr. looking like the closest thing.

Rozier would actually fit well as the main facilitator on Chicago, who currently have Kris Dunn as their starting point guard. Zach LaVine and Rozier could prove to be a potent 1-2 punch in the backcourt, while Rozier would instantly elevate the play of their young bigmen in Carter Jr., Cristiano Felicio and Lauri Markkanen.

Rozier is somewhat of a ball-dominant point guard, but the 2018 playoffs proved that he can be the starting point guard on a contender. In Chicago, he would be given the ball and the chance to prove he can do that in a full-time starting role. He would also be given many millions of dollars to do it.

Boston Celtics fans need to realize when it comes to Rozier, the old saying rings true: “If you love someone, let them go”.
