Boston Celtics: What is Jaylen Brown’s ceiling?

After a stellar sophomore season with the Boston Celtics, where does Jaylen Brown go from here? What can he improve on and what is his ceiling as a player in this league?

Jaylen Brown was tremendously impressive during the 2017-18 campaign with the Boston Celtics. He made huge strides as a player, shown by his scoring average increasing from 6.6 to 14.5.

Brown’s improved play was needed instantly last season because of Gordon Hayward‘s injury that forced him to miss the entire year. The youngsters ability to handle so much pressure and still thrive shows a lot about his talent and desire to be great.

Despite having a great season last year, there are certainly still aspects of his game that Brown needs to work on.

When driving to the basket, Jaylen loses the ball too often. Often times he goes to the hoop regardless if there is room to do so. This sometimes leads to JB having the ball stripped out of his hands from the defense.

Also, there has been instances of him getting caught in the air because he is unsure of whether to pass or shoot. His poor decision making at times offensively is displayed in his putrid .92 assist to turnover ratio, which ranked 428th best in the NBA last season.

Brown needs to improve his ball control and playmaking in order to maximize his potential as a player. As a starting shooting guard in the NBA, averaging 1.6 assists is simply not enough. Jaylen needs to learn when and where to pass the ball in order to find teammates for easy baskets. When taking the ball to the rim, he is often the focus of the defense so if he develops his playmaking skills and learns when to drive and kick the Celtics will benefit from this immensely.

Brown will improve in his playmaking and ball control skills in the coming years. He is an extremely hard worker and a very smart young man who realizes that as a player he has only scratched the surface. Brown has the work ethic needed to improve and become a star in this league, and at only 21 years old he is certainly on track to become one.

If Brown reaches his ceiling as a player, his skill set will be very similar to that of Jimmy Butler. Like Butler, Brown is a two-way player that came into the league as a solid defender and later developed an offensive game.

Both players are also fearless competitors who will do everything possible to help their team win. Jaylen has a great opportunity to become one of the better players in the NBA, and due to his skill set and mentality Jimmy Butler seems to be his ceiling.
