The Boston Celtics added Walt Lemon Jr. on a two way contract shortly after letting Kadeem Allen go

The Boston Celtics know Marcus Smart is the only significant NBA roster decision that still needs to be made. Even without him,. they have the best depth in the NBA, and do not need to be concerned about adding any more pieces that are expected to contribute in the rotation.

That being said, they still have some roster spots to work with, and they are making moves fast. Just hours after they decided to get rid of Kadeem Allen, opening up the spot for that two way roster, they added Walt Lemon Jr.

The Celtics have seen Allen for a decent amount of time, and he was clearly not impressive enough given his experience. The Celtics have a lot of options to explore, and those bottom options will not have a great window.

More from Hardwood Houdini

Allen may have done enough with the Celtics to earn an opportunity elsewhere, but the standard here is too high now. They want to explore options, but too much time has already been spent on Allen, and they do not see him ever being a contributor.

That is not to say we can expect anything different from Lemon. At this point, it would take a miracle for him to play in the NBA, but this is good news for him with the Maine Red Claws.

The Celtics would not give him that contract without wanting to see what he can do in a full G league season, and we have seen multiple G leaguers come up and play for the Celtics.

Lemon is a deep option that could maybe provide depth down the line. You can never expect these signing to materialize into anything that can change the status of the franchise, but having these kinds of smaller pieces are part of what make the Celtics so great.

They are solid at every position, with options to make sure they can get anything they need. The Celtics are not going to waste any space and they want to make sure they are getting something out of the Red Claws.

Next: Boston Celtics staretrs all have a lot to prove

The Celtics saw enough with Allen, and now it is time for the next candidate to prove what he is capable of doing, and see if it is enough to stick around with this franchise.
