The boston Celtics should be able to assemble the best second unit in the NBA

The Boston Celtics have one of the strongest starting fives in the NBA, but the bench might be where they can get their biggest advantage. They have an opportunity to have a second unit that no one else in the league can compete with, and they have a lot of different options.

There is a lot of uncertainty with Marcus Smart, but they will clearly be better with him on their second unit. Having of the best defenders in the NBA, with versatility that allows him to guard all five position, coming off the bench, is a luxury that no one else in the NBA can compete with.

You have him next to Terry Rozier, giving the Celtics the deepest core of guards in the NBA. After the improvement he showed later in the season and into the playoffs, Rozier made it clear that he is starter quality in the NBA, and the Celtics really do not need any more back court depth beyond the two of them.

More from Hardwood Houdini

The front court gets a little more complicated, and the minutes will run out quick. Not everyone will be able to have a role, but if they can get three of them to work out, creating a 10 man rotation, they will have the most options in the entire NBA.

Daniel Theis has tremendous potential. He was a strong defender last year, with the ability to switch as much as the Celtics need. He still has to show more with his three point shooting, but he could be the best three and D option off the bench for the Celtics.

He rarely makes mistakes, can expand lineup options for Brad Stevens, and have a real presence on a regular basis.

The Celtics also clearly want to see Robert Williams there. They believe in his ability to play defense right away, and he has the highest ceiling with what he can do physically. Williams may take time, but he can be a deadly defensively specialist later on in the season, and play real and important minutes when they inevitably need help inside.

The Celtics do not have much traditional size, and Williams can transform a lot of what they can do on defense if he works out as well as many people believe he can right now.

After those two it gets a bit more difficult, because both Aaron Baynes and Marcus Morris did more than enough to solidify roles on this team. The fact that the two of them are at the very bottom of the rotation is why teams will be helpless to keep up with their depth.

Morris is the offensive specialist and Baynes is the defensive specialist. It will take time, but once they figure out what they need more, that player will overtake all their minutes.

The Celtics have no traditional size, but they also do not want to use it as much. They are at their best when they are playing small ball and no matter how much Baynes can do on defense, he will slow them down on offense.

Wirh Morris, the Celtics will not need his scoring boost nearly as much. They will be able to lean more heavily on the starters to score and have better options off the bench. The Celtics understand exactly how Morris is able to do damage, but there may be no need for that.

Both of them will have to fight to maintain their roles, and there are wild cards with Guerschon Yabusele and Semi Ojeleye, but the Celtics have enough options to believe they will have the best depth in the NBA.

Next: Marcus Smart a free agency priority

All these players are also capable of playing with the starters, while maintaining what they want to do. That second unit will give Stevens more options than anyone else to battle in the most kind of situations, and he will have no problem using what he knows best in the most important moments.
