Brad Wanamaker is betting on himself with a rookie minimum contract with the Boston Celtics
The Boston Celtics have already made their first move in signing Brad Wanamaker, who clearly believes in his ability to have a strong season in the NBA. He signed a one year rookie minimum contract, meaning he left a lot of money on the table overseas.
The Celtics have done a great job getting a lot of the talent they have found overseas, and Wanamaker can be a valuable weapon for the Celtics. In this situation and under that contract, you really should not expect more than just injury depth from Wanamaker, but he would not sign that deal if he did not believe he could become more.
Wanamaker has versatility with his size, and can be reliable on offense. The Celtics will have different ways they need to use him, and all it takes is for him to find one that he can really excel at.
The Celtics have a great collection of guards, and a lot could depend on what happens with Marcus Smart. In any case, Wanamaker has seen what happens to talent that plays under Stevens, and they would not sign him if they did not intend to give him a legitimate opportunity to show what he is capable of doing.

Wanamaker has seen success overseas, and had a solid stint in the G League. He has worked to get to the position he is in, and joining he Celtics is a truly special opportunity.
You cannot expect all these players to work out for the Celtics, but Wanamaker can be valuable on both ends. He has enough experience to be reliable, and if he can establish any kind of trust, that will be enough to get him the kind of minutes he needs to be rewarded after this season.
Wanamaker wants to prove that he can have an extended career in the NBA, and the Celtics can be the best possible launching point for him. If he gets lost in the depth, then he may not get much out of this experience. If, however, he is able to break through, then everyone will notice him and be ready to give him his next opportunity, and a lot more money.
The Celtics are going to have a lot of competition for their depth this season. They are quickly running out of minutes, but that means the minutes will always end up going to the players that deserve them.
Wanamaker is coming to Boston because he believes in his ability to prove that worth. A lot of players will be getting the opportunity, but it will only be the players that separate themselves in some sort of way that can expect to maintain any kind of role this season.
