It is way too early to be worrying about Kyrie Irving’s free agency in 2019

The NBA Finals still have not concluded, but we have already been bombarded with all kinds of rumors with the Boston Celtics. There was talk about moving up in the draft, interest in LeBron James, and now Kyrie Irving is dominating the headlines.

Chris Mannix of Yahoo Sports reported that the Celtics are not fully confident that Irving will resign with the team when he becomes a free agent in 2019, with the New York Knicks being a potential threat.

While there is no reason to doubt what Mannix is reporting, there really is no sense in giving it a second thought. First of all, this is 2019 free agency. No matter how Irving feels now or how he felt when Mannix got this information, a full season can absolutely change everything.

On top of that, this is quite routine. Players do not come out and proclaim that they will absolutely stay with a team in free agency, especially when they still have a full season to go through. There is no reason for Irving to rule out all his options, and there is no way for any team to be fully confident that a player will return.

More from Hardwood Houdini

It would be great if the Celtics could wrap things up by giving him an extension before he hits the free market, but it makes little sense for Irving to make a commitment before he has to. He knows the Celtics will be offering him that max contract, and nobody knows what can transpire in a full season.

When you take into account how this core has not played a single full game together, and it is truly impossible to predict how Irving might feel about the Celtics after next season. The way this team works out together, and how much he believes in what Brad Stevens is doing with the young talent on this team will be the biggest factor for his free agency.

Right now, there are no answers whatsoever to any of those questions. Irving just saw his young talent go so much further than anyone would have anticipated, and there is no concern what so ever about losing any part of his role.

The Celtics are building something special, and everything we have seen from Irving indicates he believes in what is happening with this team. The 2018 free agency has not even hit, so it is useless thinking about what might be happening in 2019.

Next: Boston Celtics will win with speed and strength

Everyone can see how special Irving can be on the Celtics, and how much they will be able to accomplish. Mannix is highlighting out how nothing is certain in the NBA, and nobody can be taken for granted on any team. Until we get closer to the time, or see some real indications than Irving is unhappy, there is no reason to doubt that he is in this for the long haul.
