Kyrie Irving is seeking a second opinion on his sore knee

Boston Celtics fans are officially in panic mode. Kyrie Irving was just supposed to be dealing with some knee soreness, and could come back any time. Now he is seeking a second opinion, because nothing has improved.

This really does not mean much right now, and it really can go both ways at this point. What we do know is that this problem is not going away for Irving, and the Celtics might have to decide whether or not it is worth it to push any kind of surgery that may be necessary down the line.

Nobody wants to see Irving out for the year, especially with the season he is having. That being said, if pushing any kind of surgery into the offseason might threaten anything with next season, this really does not feel worth it.

More from Hardwood Houdini

People ridiculed Irving when the reports came out about him threatening surgery with the Cavaliers, but it appears as though that was legitimate. This is not going away for Irving, but he has proven that he can play through it

The question is no longer about whether or not Irving can play through, it is if it is worth it for him to play through it, if all he is doing is delaying the inevitable.

There are too many ways this thing could go to predict anything now, but you can expect the Celtics to take the cautious route. The regular season will not even be taken into consideration for this, because they are firmly in their position and so many players have already been lost.

The Celtics will keep Irving out as long as possible for the regular season without even thinking about it, but many will wonder if it is even worth it to try and bring him back for the playoffs. This is the best opportunity they’ve had to make the Finals since Brad Stevens took over, but that would still be shortsighted compared to the approach the Celtics have been taking.

There is still a good chance that Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart and Irving will all return, and the Celtics will go on a long playoff run. What we are now realizing, however, is that there is still a lot of ways this can get worse.

We will not know anything definitive until we actually get the second opinion, and even fom there they may be more things to evaluate. At this point, all we know is that rest can help, and that alone could put his season in jeopardy, or have him back in no time.
