Jaylen Brown is out indefinitely after entering the concussion protocol

To absolutely no one’s surprise, Jaylen Brown has entered the NBA concussion protocol. Brown suffered the kind of fall that looked like it could end a season. Somehow, he did not suffer any injury that would have ended a great sophomore campaign for him, but there still is no timetable for when he might return.

The Celtics had to deal with some concussion issues for Al Horford over the last two years, and made it clear that they will be overly cautious. The scary part is that Horford never suffered anything close to as brutal as Brown, and you never know how long these recoveries take.

More from Hardwood Houdini

Right now, fans really need to make sure their expectations for his return are tempered. There is no big reason to believe his playoffs will be in jeopardy, but anything before that is completely up in the air. The Celtics really wanted to see Brown’s role grow in these last games, but it will always be an easy decision to be as cautious as possible with a concussion.

The Celtics have been dealing with injuries all year long, so they should be in a decent position to overcome this, without losing too much ground. The reality is that catching the Raptors would have been hard enough, and this really hurts their chances at that top seed.

The bench really has been stepping up lately, and that timing is wonderful. The Celtics have a lot of different pieces they will try to use, but Brown’s athleticism made him one of the most unique players on this team, and they will feel it every game he is out on both ends of the court.

Hopefully the injury will not be as bad as the fall made it look, and Brown will have time to get comfortable again before playoff time. Right now, however, fans can be happy that there was no other damage suffered. Trying to guess when he might return could be an impossible task, but it already feels like they avoided a disaster with how awful things looked when he first fell.
