Kevin Love’s injury should not change any of the Boston Celtics’ plans
The NBA is currently going through one of the worst stretches for injuries in recent memory, and the most recent All Star to go down is Kevin Love, who is expected to miss at least six to eight weeks. The Cleveland Cavaliers have been struggling, and losing Love right now could seriously change their fate in the Eastern Conference this year.
The Cavaliers already had a tall task ahead of them with the hole they put themselves in, behind both the Celtics and the Raptors. When you take one their their three best players out of the equation, and add more chaos to a team that is all out of sorts, there is no telling how bad it can get.
We have already seen that there is only so much LeBron James can do by himself during the regular season, and if they do not find a way to rally without Love, you might have to start thinking about the possibility of the Cavaliers starting the playoffs on the road.
Even if the Cavaliers hit rock bottom, and they are incapable of bouncing back and do not get better while Love is out, the Celtics cannot change any of their plans. There is enough time before the trade deadline to see the window in the East this season get absolutely massive, but the Celtics cannot base their decisions on what the Cavaliers may or may not be there year.

Keep in mind, this does not end Love’s season, and for as bad the Cavaliers can look while he is out, you still cannot bet on James getting him back and getting back into form in the playoffs. On top of that, even if you think the Cavaliers will never be the same, it is still too shortsighted for the Celtics.
They are not going to rush into anything this season, and the state of the Cavaliers will not change how much they will be willing to give up in a win now move, and he will not threaten the development of the core that is going to play with Gordon Hayward.
It is impossible not to get excited about how open the East looks now. The Celtics are in a great position to get home court, and if the Cavaliers continue like this, it will not be like it has been in the path. There are a lot of reasons to try and win now and make that move at the deadline, but if you focus just on the Celtics, a win now move does not make sense.
The Celtics need to stay focused on what they are doing, and what they want to grow into, if nothing else because being better than the Cavaliers, especially the way they are now, is nowhere near enough.

The Celtics are not building this core just to get to the finals, and no matter what you think about their ability to beat the Cavaliers this season, it will not change the standards they will have to beat the Warriors with this current core.
