Jayson Tatum is dealing with issues with his knee following the 76ers game

There are no indications that there is anything serious here, but the last thing any Boston Celtics fans want to hear is any kind of injury trouble for Jayson Tatum. He has been the healthiest player on the team so far this season, but he is now dealing with some lingering knee soreness following their last win (Via Steve Bulpett).

Bulpett also mentions how test are coming for Tatum, so we should have some clarity soon. One thing you can be assured of, however, is that patience will be the number one priority. The Celtics have a deep bench and have been playing through injuries all season long. Tatum has an impact that no one else on the team can replace, but he is the player they need to be most patient with.

The Celtics want to make sure that nothing gets in the way of how Tatum develops, and they will hold him out for as long as is necessary this season. They have proven that they can hold onto that number seed despite injuries, but they cannot recover from any long term issues for Tatum.

When you take into account that the issues are with his knee, and it would not surprise me to see him get a bit of extra rest, even if it is not entirely necessary.

The timing actually worked out quite well. The Celtics still do not play again until Tuesday, giving them plenty of time to figure out exactly what is wrong with him, and see if there is any reason what so ever to keep him out of the lineup longer.

The biggest shame would be that now is the time many are expecting Tatum to really start breaking out. We are seeing his role gradually increase over time, and now that Stevens has had all this time to prepare, I’d expect him to have a lot more ways to make sure Tatum is as involved as possible.

If Tatum misses any time, Stevens will have no choice other than to adjust in a different direction. Even if it is not permanent, Stevens will have to explore his other options if Tatum is out, and that will put his growth on hold for this season.

It would suck to see Tatum held back in any way this season, but the importance of his growth this season pales in comparison to the importance of his overall growth, and the only real threat to that is aggravating a knee injury that could have been avoided if he just took that extra time off.

Good news is that the Celtics have been patient with each and every injury, and if they decide to put him on the court you can feel assured that he is at no additional risk.
