The Maine Red Claws have signed former number one pick Anthony Bennett

In a move that is unlikely to have any real impact on the Boston Celtics, the Maine Red Claws have made some noise by signing former number one overall pick Anthony Bennett. Bennett was one the most scrutinized first overall picks, and at no point lived up to any kind of expectations.

He has bounced around a lot, never finding any kind of success. He has been decent in the G-League so far, and he now gets a chance at redemption on what should be the most exciting G League team.

Bennett was a number one pick, but do not let that fool you. There is no reason to believe he has any chance of actually joining the Celtics at any point. It is not like this is a sample size issue with Bennett. Four different teams have given him an opportunity, and at 24 years old you can no longer appeal to him needing time to develop.

More from Hardwood Houdini

Bennett has never shown real NBA ability at any point in his career, and it would take a miraculous turn around in order to get any chance at being bumped up to the Celtics.

The intrigue, however, is that if Bennett somehow had one of the craziest turnarounds in the history of the NBA, he fits the kind of mold the Celtics want in their players. He has the size to be a hybrid of a wing and undersized big, and the stature to bring some resistance in the paint in small ball situations.

Obviously, his defensive ability is not there. If, however, he had that turnaround, then he the physical traits to fit in with what the Celtics want to do on that end.

Bennett is also supposed to be somewhat of a three point threat. It has never worked out well for him, but the potential was there when he was the first overall pick. If everything worked out perfectly, he would be that three and D type player that the Celtics are always looking for.

There is no reason to expect Bennett to ever reach any of this potential, but it is fun to think about what a story it would be if the Celtics managed to turn around the former number one overall pick.
