Do you ever hear of when a certain persona is winning in their respective field and they get a little too confident and accidentally “shoot themselves in the foot?”

It might be too soon, but the Boston Celtics may have just created a perfect example of this during the draft this upcoming Thursday.

The Celtics have agreed to trade the 2017 number one overall pick to the 76ers in exchange for the third overall pick in this year’s draft and more depending on the future seasons’ outcomes.

Now that the 76ers have the first pick in the draft this next Thursday, they will almost definitely use it to draft Markelle Fultz, adding the young rookie prospect into a thriving and hopeful lineup that includes players like Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.

If you’re a 76ers fan, you should be super excited for what this team could become over the next few seasons. Simmons and Fultz will both be rookies this upcoming season and the Sixers will now have a full and healthy young lineup to start attacking their way through the East.

Assuming the roster remains the way it is currently (with their new draft picks) and everyone performs the way they did last season, the Sixers could finally make their way to the Playoffs for the first time since 2012. But wait… does Boston understand what kind of monster they may have just created?

Giving the 76ers Fultz automatically makes them a huge threat in the conference. When Boston should be more worried about taking down the Cavs each postseason, the absolute last thing they should be doing is giving other teams a chance at catching up to their levels.

However, even when this deal comes to fruition on draft night, the Celtics are still in a great position. They get a top 3 pick in the draft as well as guaranteeing themselves something more in the future.

Not only that, but Boston also has a large lead in attracting free agents over the next couple of summers that could eventually make them into another “superteam.” Although I would hate to see the NBA continue to breed these “superteams,” it would still be nice to see some change in the Finals come next postseason(s).

Now that this trade is final, the 76ers have a chance at becoming great again. While Boston still has the upperhand in the division and in the conference in general (minus the Cavs), Philadelphia has a unique opportunity to turn some heads this upcoming season with their expected picks and roster.

That being said, Boston will look to draft another young rookie prospect third overall this upcoming Thursday. Who will Boston turn their heads towards now? Once again, that’s another debate for another time.
