Although the Celtics came up short in the playoffs this year, they definitely came up big in the long-run of this league.

The Celtics were eliminated from the playoffs just under two weeks ago. It came as no surprise Mr. 4th Quarter and the Celtics could not handle the King and his two princes (my nickname for Irving and Love) with the series going to only five games.

The number one seed in the Eastern Conference has the number one pick this year in the draft. Yeah, you heard that correctly, the Boston Celtics are going to have the number one pick on June 22nd. Thanks to the stupidity of the Brooklyn Nets’ 2013 regime, the Celtics have been set up for almost guaranteed success with many 1st Round picks over the course of the past few years. They have used them wisely, with the most notable example being the young rookie sensation Jaylen Brown, and now the Celtics have yet another opportunity to create more phenoms.

That being said however, based on who the Celtics are looking to draft, I think they could be making a big mistake if they are trying to win soon. Obviously, Markelle Fultz is looking like a great option for the Celtics, and many believe that he will be the number one overall pick… but I’m not like everyone else.

Here’s my opinion: Fultz is the Ben Simmons of this year’s draft. Think about it, they were both on mediocre teams that didn’t even get the chance to prove themselves in the March Madness Tournament. I’m not saying that Fultz isn’t talented (because he clearly is very talented), but I think the Celtics have much better options that could help improve the roster next season.

Looking at the latest NBA Mock Draft 2017, Fultz is still predicted to go first overall to Boston. Let’s think logically though, why would Boston draft a fresh point guard when they already landed what could be the next Allen Iverson? I’m clearly talking about Isaiah Thomas, but I’m not saying that getting Fultz in this roster would be a bad thing, because Fultz subbing in for Thomas late in the 1st quarter would be a real threat to opposing teams.

However, I think that the Celtics could do more damage if they were to acquire a young small/power forward that could eventually start over Jae Crowder. My best bet would be Jayson Tatum out of Duke University. He’s quick, powerful, and a huge threat on the offensive end that could prove very influential for the Celtics. I think learning under Al Horford and Crowder on a great team like the Celtics could be the difference come next postseason.

All that being said, the Celtics can’t go wrong. They truly are the luckiest team in the league right now, because even if their pick doesn’t work out the way they wanted it to, they’ll probably get the number one pick next year too, once again thanks to the 2013 Brooklyn Nets’ front office.

There is no “wrong pick” this year for the Boston Celtics, and based on how they performed this past year, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Celtics return to the NBA Finals next season. Who knows? They might even land another star in free-agency, but that’s another debate.
