Preview: Celtics Look for Third Straight Win
By Jeremy Karll
The Celtics return home on Wednesday night as they take on the Pelicans and go for three straight wins
The Boston Celtics were able to finish their five-game road trip 3-2 and on a two game winning streak. After their big win over the Golden State Warriors, Boston was able to take down the Los Angeles Lakers with ease. They have clinched a playoff spot and the race for home-court advantage in the first round is in full swing. The Celtics, at 45-32, cannot afford to lose any more games if they want a top-four seed, especially not to the Pelicans.
The New Orleans Pelicans have been one of the biggest disappointments this season. After making the playoffs last season, the Pelicans have regressed more than anyone could have imagined. They’re currently 29-47 and have been near the bottom of the standings the whole season. They are coming off a game against the Philadelphia 76ers last night, so tired legs could be yet another disadvantage they face in this game.
Evan Turner will be out for the Celtics due to a left eye abrasion. Marcus Smart and Terry Rozier should now see an increase of minutes as Jae Crowder is still recovering from his high ankle sprain. Avery Bradley is expected to return to the team though, after missing Sunday’s game for the birth of his child.
The Pelicans have been decimated with injuries this season, a reason why they have done so poorly. Jrue Holiday and Anthony Davis headline the team’s players that are going to miss the final couple of games. Point guard Norris Cole is questionable to play against Boston, as well.
The Pelicans have had to turn to Luke Babbitt for scoring because of all the injuries. He has played well over their past couple of game but still isn’t someone you want leading your team. The loss of Ryan Anderson and Anthony Davis has also caused New Orleans to turn to players like Omer Asik and Kendrick Perkins for heavy minutes. The Pelicans have no real threat down low as the seven-foot Asik usually plays 15 minutes or less.
Jared Sullinger and Amir Johnson should be able to dominate the boards early and often. This could also be a game where rookie Jordan Mickey sees a little playing time. This could be a perfect game to have the young big man see significant action against below-average NBA talent.

The biggest thing to watch out for is if Boston can jump out early and what happens if they do. Recently, they got up on the Lakers by double-digits early in the game, however, Boston was unable to maintain the lead. They also let the Phoenix Suns back into a blowout game, forcing Brad Stevens to put his starters back in.
These are the types of games down the stretch that will give key players rest as their last three games will be key. Getting out ahead early is just the first battle, Boston has to be able to put a team away and not let them back in. These could also be games in which the rookies see some action, however, it hasn’t happened because they’re not able to close a team out.

The Pelicans have been killed with injuries this season and they have one of the worst intact rosters. This should be as easy as a win as any for Boston, although, getting out ahead early will be key.
