The long NBA season can drag on for some players in the league. They have to play 82 games, travel all around the world, and probably get very little sleep while they are in the season. Relationships on the team can strain, considering teammates see each other more than their wives, fiancés, or girlfriends. Sports can get people emotional, and all kinds of fights can occur due to the taxing nature of a regular season. However, after yesterday, no one should think that these Boston Celtics dislike being around each other at all. You see it on the court when they play, but seeing it behind the scenes is just as rewarding to know for fans. Players joking about checking their coach if they are high, or giving a teammate a food eating challenge is all fun in my book.
Those who do not follow Amir Johnson on snapchat (like myself), missed a truly hilarious moment in their life. Kelly Olynyk claimed that he could finish a Moe’s Burrito in four bites, leaving Johnson speechless and he decided to challenge him to do so. Johnson then thought it was a great idea to record this moment, and was using the popular app Snap Chat to send a video story of Olynyk’s conquest. Johnson decided to narrate what was going on, and the hilarity ensued. If there is something that all Celtics fans need to watch, it’s this.
Kelly Olynyk really is the little brother that everyone on the Celtics is allowed to “tease on” (that doesn’t include you Kevin Love). There’s no reason for someone to believe they can do this, but the center thought he could do the impossible. It was funny to watch him try and complete the dare on the plane. Plus, listening to Johnson’s commentary is pure gold, especially with how he decided to finish the story (I won’t write what he said because it is NSFW).
I really found it funny to watch Olynyk desperately try to finish the burrito. Also league executives might not be a fan of seeing all of the money floating around when the challenge was first initiated. Everyone should know that basketball players gamble with each other for silly things (especially on a golf course). This was just perfect to have players bet to see if Olynyk could. It just looks like a group of “bros” hanging out and having a good time.
I’m not afraid to mention how I’ve done silly food challenges back in my college days (50 McNugget challenge and Gallon challenge). This was just a funny little collection of videos that fans can appriciate. (And spoiler alert, I didn’t complete either challenge I was involved with). The full video has been uploaded to YouTube and you can watch it there, which I highly recommend.
However, it’s not all about burrito love and funny Snap Chat stories. Evan Turner, every Celtics fans favorite player, gave reporters soundbite gold on Monday. Evan Turner was a regular starter last season, but now is being utilized as a bench player. So he was asked about the change and offered a very interesting take on his new role.
“ spoke to me. I had to smell his breath for alcohol. I checked his office for drugs. I said, ‘You’ve gotta be high.’ You know what I’m saying? But I kept it classy of course, and I trust the process. And that was it. But it’s unbelievable, right?” – courtesy of ESPN.com
Never change Turner. Can you believe that? I honestly hope Turner said that straight to Stevens’ face, because I bet he got a kick out of that soundbite as well. Of course that lead to some interesting hot takes from Celtics fans and personalities.
Turner is the gift that keeps on giving. I don’t mind these comments whatsoever, because he’s just having fun. Stevens will probably find it funny, and only play him for 12 minutes against the Bucks as “payback”. Then Turner somehow gets a triple-double and glares over at Stevens telling him to start him. Yes, the scenarios that play in my mind for the Celtics this season.
It looks like the Celtics are just a bunch of guys having a good time. They get paid millions of dollars to play a game they love, so there’s no need to be upset at one another. Sure, there have been statements from Isaiah Thomas about how the slow start isn’t good. However, it seems like things are going well on an interpersonal level with the roster and personnel. Team building is a huge component during the regular season, and can prove a powerful asset down the stretch of the season.
