Boston Celtics Add Levi Randolph
The Boston Celtics present a very unique station for incoming players. The bright side is that with such a young team with so much uncertainty regarding nearly every single roster spot, it gives players plenty of opportunities to prove that they are worthy of a spot. The difference between the Celtics’ bench and their starting unit is much less than most teams in the NBA.
The bad news is that the Celtics already have more options than they can handle, especially at the guard and power forward position. It’s hard to imagine an undrafted free agent coming in and leaving enough of an impression to surpass the many options that are initially ahead of him.
The bottom line is that the Celtics are one of the youngest teams in the league and they are on the rise. Even if a roster spot is unlikely the Celtics are a great franchise for a young player to be a part of. Chances are an undrafted free agent will struggle to get a roster spot on any team. The Celtics are a great place for a player to take a step back while developing and then once they have reached their potential, the Celtics will be significantly closer to contending.
Levi Randolph is a name that most won’t recognize and odds are it will remain that way for in the near future. Randolph had stints with other NBA teams but with nothing working out he has opted to join the Celtics’ training camp roster.

Levi Randolph is yet another guard that has the likes of Marcus Smart, Isaiah Thomas, Evan Turner, Avery Bradley, R.J Hunter and Terry Rozier already ahead of him and even though he could provide some additional size there is next to no chance he will be on the opening day roster.
Even if Randolph does not expect to make the team he clearly sees the Celtics as a great opportunity to develop. With a guard friendly offensive system Randolph should be able to have great development, even if it is just with the Maine Red Claws. AI.com has reported that Randolph even turned down offers to play professionally overseas in favor of an opportunity with the Celtics.
There really is no need for Randolph on the Celtics. He offers nothing that the Celtics can’t already get from a player currently on the roster but he believes he has something to prove and and there’s no better place for a young developing player to be than Boston.
The Celtics will allow Randolph to grow and with all the uncertainty surrounding their roster it cannot be ruled out that Randolph may one day get an opportunity with the NBA team. A lot would have to go wrong with a lot of guards currently on the roster but in the event of a block buster trade, which should not be ruled out, the Celtics may want another, bigger guard to fall back on.
Randolph may wind up being a name that is forgotten and lost in Boston but his willingness to turn down overseas offers is a good sign of the Celtics being an attractive place for young guards that wish to develop into eventual NBA players.
