Celtics Re-Sign Jae Crowder to 5-year, $35 Million Deal
Hope you guys like Jae Crowder, cause we got him back – for FIVE more years!
Shams Charani of RealGM.com reports:
"RFA Jae Crowder has reached agreement on a five-year, $35 million deal with the Boston Celtics, league sources tell RealGM."
Fortunately, if you’re not on the Crowder hype-train, which you should be at this point, he’s on a very affordable deal that can be easily traded – if we ever need to.
Yes, this now means Tobias Harris is now likely out of the picture, but we would’ve had to pay him three times what we’re now paying Crowder. And honestly, Harris isn’t even close to being worth three times more than Crowder.

Today – on the advent of the “let’s overpay in preparation of the cap-increase” free agency – role players have received largely unwarranted max deals, thus, we should consider ourselves lucky to land Crowder on such a reasonable contract. I entered today worried that we’d have to pay Jae Crowder the same amount of money the Raptors paid Demarre Carroll: $15 million. Well, we got Crowder for half that, phew.
While Crowder only averaged 9.5 points and 4.6 rebounds last year in Boston, every Celtics fan knows Crowder’s impact transcended statistics; as his energy and grit is what largely led to the C’s making an unlikely playoff run.
Also, Crowder’s fit in small-ball lineups as a stretch-four (can even play the five!) will easily mesh with recent-addition Amir Johnsonand his knack at playing small ball.
With reports saying Jonas Jerebko will be returning as well, the 2015-2016 Celtics will largely resemble last year’s post-Rondo Celtics – whom as we all know – were second in the Eastern Conference following the All-Star break.
With $61.4 million committed to this season’s salary cap already, the Celtics don’t have any more wiggle room under the cap, so it appears we’ll be heading into next year with our current squad (unless we can move Gerald Wallace, which shouldn’t be too hard anymore). While this offseason’s acquisitions thus far may disappoint some: from a sentimental perspective – it has been a success.
We fell in love with last year’s squad, and well, it looks like we’re stuck with them.
However, it looks like Brandon Bass will now fall casualty to Ainge’s offseason agenda, and for that – I am sad. No time for grief, my friends; it’s time to hit the F5 button some more…
