Isaiah Thomas’ Surgery not a Concern for Boston

Any time the best player on a team announces that he had surgery done there will naturally be concern from the fan base. Isaiah Thomas dealt with an injury at the end of last season and coupling that with the recent news that he had undergone a procedure is not the kind of thing Boston Celtics fans want to be hearing, especially after they failed to sign another top scorer in free agency.

Fortunately, this is one of those times where you can rest easy as Thomas’ hand surgery was both expected and will have no residual effects. The surgery itself actually occurred in June and after Brad Stevens addressed the issue there is no reason to linger on whether or not it will impact Thomas in the upcoming season.

Stevens even said (Via ESPN) “It was something we knew at the end of the year they would have to (remove)”. There has never, at any point, been any indication that Thomas may be at risk because of this surgery.

Thomas will have a short recovery time but it is expected to last just two to four weeks. Not only will Thomas be ready for the start of the season but he will not even be missing out on any significant portion of the offseason.

The Celtics will be forced to continue to depend on Thomas as their lead scorer and given everything both Stevens and Thomas have said about the surgery there is no reason to think about potential back up plans.

Thomas will be ready to play for the Celtics and if he can keep up his play from last season the Celtics will certainly need his health to hold up. Thomas was snubbed of the 6th man of the year award but he could very well end up being the best player on the Celtics for a second straight year coming off the bench.

The Celtics have enough guard depth that they can afford to allow Thomas any time he needs to recover but with no indication that this will spill over into the regular season the issue is truly a non issue.

Rest assured Celtics fans, barring a dramatic set back, Thomas will be suiting up on opening day and he will be back to the form that allows him to score 19 points per game coming off the bench.
